Getting your Permit - what you need to know.

What documents are required to get a NJ learner's permit?

A 16-year old applying for a driving permit will need his/her original birth certificate with raised seal or passport, social security card, and proof of completed written test and vision test.

What is the age requirement to receive a NJ learner’s permit?

Students must be 16 years of age to take the behind-the-wheel course and receive a NJ learner’s permit.

Where do I go to get my driving lessons?

You don’t have to go anywhere!  An Advantage Driving School instructor will pick you up at your home, school or place of employment. We’ll drop you back off when the session is complete.

After I’ve completed my behind-the-wheel training, what else do I need to do before taking my driver’s license test?

After you receive your learners permit we recommend that you take every opportunity to practice with a licensed driver. It’s also a good idea to have a review lesson with one of our instructors the week of your road test. This will give you an opportunity to ask last minute questions about your upcoming road test, and get in a few more hours behind the wheel with a professional instructor.

What happens if my permit is lost or damaged?

It is important to know that an original permit is required while practice driving and on the day of your road test. If your permit is lost or damaged in any way, you’ll need a duplicate. A 16 year old must get a duplicate permit from their driving school. We’ll be happy to help you with the paperwork.

Am I insured while taking driving lessons?

During your driving lessons you are fully insured with our driving school under our policy. This policy is the maximum allowed! Upon completion of the 6 hour behind-the-wheel program we issue all students an insurance discount certificate to present to your insurance company. Contact your insurance agency to see what discounts will apply to you. They are the best resource for this information.

What type of car is acceptable for my road test?

Once you are ready for your road test, your vehicle must meet certain requirements:

  • The vehicle used for testing must have a an emergency brake.
  • The brake must be within easy reach of the driving license examiner.
  • If the vehicle has a console in between the two front seats, there must be an emergency brake, or the vehicle must be equipped with a dual control brake.

  • If the vehicle does not meet these requirements  you will not be able to take the road test.
  • You will also need to show proof of valid insurance and registration of the vehicle you are using.
  • Both Automatic or stick shift is allowed.
